Can a dental porcelin crown get a cavity?

I had a root canal and porcelin crown placed on my molar tooth about 7 years ago. Out of the blue, litterally a change overnight, a small black hole has appeared on the bite surface. I have good oral hygiene and naturally very white teeth. What's going on here... Is this normal?

I think that you chipped away a piece of porcilin if it is on the chewing surface. There is metal under the porcelain which would look black. You should bring this to your dentists attention at your next cleaning and have him/her check with your insurance, most will cover a new crown after 5 year.

Actually when you get crowns and Caps you need to take much better care of your teeth then actually before you had gotten them
Reply:i think what you are seeing is the metal underneath the porcelein. I have some crowns myself and if the bite is not right, my dentist would adjust it and some dark spots come out bec. it is the base of the crown.
Reply:The crowns are made of porcelain fused to metal, if it is the same tooth with the crown, during the night you may grind your teeth and some porcelain could have chipped off. Most dentists guarantee their crowns for 3-5 yrs
Reply:Not you cannot get a cavity in an artificial tooth. You have probably chipped the porcelain somehow.

Reply:i dont think that that is possible because pocelin is very hard but then again its very fragile talk to your dentist about it
