Are temporary dental crowns pre-manufactured?

I know that permanent dental crowns are custom made by a dental lab over a period of a few weeks. My question is.... how are TEMPORARY crowns made? Are they made from scratch by my dentist? Or does my dentist have various sizes of pre-made crowns that he uses for temporary crowns?

Are temporary dental crowns pre-manufactured?
There are actually 3 ways to make temporary crowns, the third being that made from a lab. Sometimes under special circumstances we will have the lab custom make a temporary, but it is usually a bridge spanning several teeth and if there are circumstances requiring them to wear it for an extended time or if someone is very self-conscious about their appearance.

We have made them chair-side, from a block of hand-mixed acrylic and we have the prefabricated temp crowns that look great once they are trimmed and relined with the hand-mixed acrylic.

Remember temporary crowns are meant for temporary purposes, so they MAY not look or fit as well as the permanent crown.

Good question!!!
Reply:Both ways. Temporary crowns can be made chairside, or can be delivered pre-fabricated. It just depends on the person making your temporary, and how much time they have to fabricate one. That, and also which they prefer to make for the patient.

Making one chairside is usually done based on a preliminary impression or cast made of your mouth; this is a custom job that is a very good fit to what your original crown was like. A prefabricated temporary can also be a good temporary, as long as it fits in the area so that your adjacent teeth don't shift while you're waiting for your permanent crown to be made. Again, using either or is an option, and just depends on your dentist and what they're more comfortable making.
