What happens when you go for a dental crown prep?

Hi Guys

Im a very nervous patient and I am going to have two crowns done. Today is my prep visit for 45 mins and I am just wondering what exactly they will do to me.

Im taking 2mg of valium before I go too to chill me out :)

What happens when you go for a dental crown prep?
I just had a crown done last week. If the issue with the tooth has already been taken care of (like a cavity or root canal completed) they will use a drill to file down the tooth on all sides and the top so that when you get the crown put on it will fit and your tooth will be the same size as before. Then they will take 2 different molds with different kind of substance. They'll use the molds to make a temporary cap (that step is not done inside your mouth) and they will glue that on until your next visit. In my experience, none of it hurt at all while I was at the dentist - the filing doesn't hurt, the mold stuff doesn't gag you or stay on your teeth. The only problem I had was when they put the temporary cap on, the edge was very sharp and cut up my tongue for days because he didn't smooth it out well...move your tongue all around when they put the temporary cap on and make sure it isn't sharp. The real cap took less than ten minutes to glue on and was smoothed out perfectly. It really isn't a painful experience - good luck!

P.S. The tooth I had it done on was the very back one on the bottom, I don't know if anything would be different for a tooth in a different location, but I don't think so.
Reply:They will have to sand your existing teeth down so that there is room to place the crowns atop them, if they haven't already done so. They will also have to take a mold of your existing teeth where they crowns will go. To do this they will fill a mouth shaped rack thing with a spongy substance. They will place that in your mouth, smooshing it against your teeth until it sets (this can take several minutes). You should do fine. Just relax %26amp; have faith.
Reply:do not be nervous nothing BBBBiiiiiiiiiiGGGGGGGGG is going to happen . they will reduce the size of your teeth so that cap gets fixed over it .nothing seriously serious

Reply:Your dr and their assistant will take an impression of your tooth that will be used to make your temporary crown at the end. Then topical anesthic will be placed to desensitize the tissue before the injection. Then the dr will give the injection. The dr will then reduce the tooth in heighth and width by about 1 to 1.5mm on each side and 1.5 to 2mm on the top When that is done the dr will take the final impression that will be sent to the lab or done in the in office lab to make your crown. The dr or asst will then make your tempory crown. If they are right next to each other more then likely the temporaries will be one unit to make then stronger. The temp will be fitted and the bite adj'd and cemented in with temporary cement and then in a couple wks you will have your perment crown placed..Good Luck
