i don't have insurance until august 07 and i have a horrible odor coming from underneath my metal/ceramic permanent crown. i can't see the doc because i can't afford it w/o insurance. can someone tell me, if it was a good idea for me to take it off myself? it's already a bit, i'm sure if i keep shaking it it will come off eventually. i did have a root canal done before the crown was put on, does that mean i won't feel pain when i eat drink hot cold?
please serious answers only, i know that i need to go as soon as i can but i'm afraid my tooth or flesh is rotting underneath my crown and it's bad and embarrassing. i do brush and floss regularly but maybe because the tooth had been shakey just a tiny bit for a long time... it could've done something to it? , it's the only location it's coming from.. i scrub my tongue all the time and the only time the odor gets set off is when i floss.thanks
Should i remove my permanent dental crown?
I would not do anything to it myself. You could try using hydrogen peroxide for a mouth rinse, make sure you do not swallow it. It will help "boil out" any foreign material in there, and help you gums, as well. I had a bad case of gingivitis and halitosis (bad breath) that's how I took care of it. My dentist is "old school" and he said to do this. It's inexpensive and very effective at controlling odors.
Reply:could just be a mild infection from food getting caught around the gumline and the crown. i have the same problem with my wisdom teeth. they are breaking through my gums, but not completely, so i need to floss and irrigate the area to prevent infection. when i get an infection it does not hurt, but there is an odor and a yellowish liquid (pus) that will be in the area of the infection. do not keep trying to remove the crown. let the dentist do it when you get insurance. just floss regularly and try to irrigate the area. you can buy a special syringe at the drug store that has a curved plastic end on it for irrigation. fill with warm water or salt water and squirt under gumline and around tooth daily
Reply:You should try to leave the crown in place on the tooth. once you have a root canal done on a tooth, the tooth is no longer alive and they dry out , and become brittle. The crown is protecting your tooth, and the root canal. If you are having problems with your tooth you can go and have a consultation to see what the problem is and if it can be taken care of without much cost. If you leave it like it is you can get a serious infection around the gums and it can lead to an infection in the bone. You can try to rince with peroxide but you should dilute it ,and do not leave it on your gums because it will eat at them. Rinse well. It sounds like maybe the crown , is loose and needs reset. Food staying around the tooth and you irritating it by constantly cleaning it isnt good. You should call a dentist , Maybe a new one who gives free consultaions. The cost will be worth saving your teeth and gums in the long run.
Reply:I too say leave it and use a rinse (e.g. hydrogen peroxide) until it falls out on its own or you can see the dentist. You probably have an infection or a cavity. One risk of taking it off is that some remaining tooth may crumble or break off. This URL points to a Q%26amp;A about a very similar situation:

Reply:you should not do all home remedies i e trying to remove crown on your own. as your teeth is root canal treated it is already weak and your trial of removing crown may lead to fracture that underneath teeth. please take professional help though you don't have insurance. it will not cost you much. your crown and underneath teeth are in proper shape ask your dentist to remove your crown and do the scaling and place your same crown with minor modification in it. start using chlorhexidine mouthwash which will take care of bad breath. if you find any difficulty please find free to contact me on Dr mitesh parekh, 9890486787, parekh1710@yahoo.co.in
Reply:I have 14 crowns, 2 roor canals, a 4-unit bridge and 2 titanium screws from an accident a long time ago. From that I worked for an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon for 10 years and I don't have insurance either right now but I would wait if at all possible until August. You could gargle with hydrogen perioxide and carry/use mouth fresheners. Can you use a water pic to clean under the crown since it's loose? If you try to remove it yourself you could ruin the dentists chances of saving the tooth.
Reply:Don't take the crown off yourself. Postponing a visit to your dentist will probably end up costing you more money in the long run. It is possible that the crown simply needs to be recemented. The smell is not necessarily an indication of infection or decay. Recementing a crown is much cheaper and easier than getting a new one or having to get a root canal, extraction, bridge, implant, or removable partial denture.
Reply:If you remove the crown you may be able to remove the food that is causing the bad odor but then you have a different problem, because you must have the crown recemented quickly otherwise your tooth can over erupt by a fraction of a milimeter which will then mean it will be too high when you go in August! By leaving it on, there may be on going caries which means that there is a hole developing and your crown may not fit well after the treatment and require a new crown. You are in a difficult situation and no one should judge you, whatever your decision
