No not at all. Some people have crowns because of a root canal. The root canal therapy leaves the tooth with out a nerve that supplies the nutrients to keep the tooth vital, without it the tooth becomes dried out and brittle and susceptible to fracture and then loss. So they always need a crown to encompass them and give them strength. Others get them because of a fractured cusp or a large filling that's being replaced. They are usually placed to give the tooth structure added support to help it maintain stability during mastication. There are even cases where one is placed side by side just for symmetry especially in anterior teeth. Hope I've cleared this up for you!
Do all new dental crowns require a root canal first?
No. It depends on how deep the damage is. I have a crown on my back molar that didn't need one.

Reply:If the tooth has extensive decay or if there is a risk of infection or injury to the tooth's pulp, a root canal treatment may first be performed, but this is not "required"
Reply:No.
Reply:To the point... the answer would be ..NO! We dont remove nerves out of teeth for the hell of it! It's un'ethical.
