Why doesn't dental insurance cover cerec crowns? and how much do you pay for a root canal w/ insurance?

I have Smilesaver insurance and talked to my dentist about insurances, and it sounded to me like none fully cover cerec crowns. I'm just wondering why, and how much do you pay for one with insurance? I pay $850 with mine. Also, I had to pay $850 for a root canal with a specialist. How much is normal to pay for a root canal with insurance? Are these expenses very high or typical?

typical specialists cost more and it depends on the number of canals in the tooth.....as far as the cerec crown goes.....i personally would NEVER get one.....they're crap...how can a machine replace a human, lab techs are amazing..a lady in our office just got one and its been nothing but trouble for her....she said it feels like a big chunk of ...crap in her mouth, no anatomy, just my opinion of course
Reply:most dental insurance has a maximum on what they will pay in a year, and also a maximum on various, usually expensive, procedures.

if you do 2 cleanings, plus a filling or 2, then you come out ahead.

if you do only 2 cleanings, or less, then the insurance company comes out ahead.

if you do more than the cleanings and a couple of fillings, then the limit comes into play, and the insurance company pays out more than it takes in, but you also have to pay.

typically however, you'll pay less than you would have w/o insurance.
Reply:Some insurance will pay for Cerec crowns. They are not "crap" as the above poster said. The Cerec 3D can produce very life-like and well fitting crowns if done by an experience clinician. I've also seen some complete garbage come back from lab techs as well as beautiful work so please don't generalize. Cerec is an excellent alternative in certain situations and is perfectly acceptable. That amount for a root canal sounds right, but it depends on what tooth and where you live. Prices vary by area considerably as well as insurance policies.
Reply:Hi, I didn't have dental insurance when I was in college, but I found an insurance alternative. It was a discount program, and it only cost like $12 a month. I had a root canal done, and I only paid $375 for the root canal, and $550 for the crown. It covers all pre-existing conditions, go here for more info: www.everyonebenefits.com/40524594 If you have any questions, let me know! Good luck!
