"D2750" Crown: What is the difference between base metal and high noble metal?

I'm in need of a crown and my dental insurance covers a crown, porcelain fused to base metal at $0 patient out of pocket. A porcelain crown fused to high noble metal is being quoted at $750 out of pocket by my dentist. First, what is the difference between base and high noble metal, and is there a difference in appearance on the surface given that both are capped by porcelain crowns? Second, are the metals significantly different to account for a $750 difference? FYI, the $750 does not include build up or possible root canal. Thanks in advance!

Ask to see a copy of the pre-treatment estimate that was sent in and received back with the quotes on it... this doesn't sound right... or call your insurance company directly and get the quotes yourself.
