Temporary Crown after a root canal, how long does it last?

I just had a root canal done on tooth #14 (upper molar) last week. The endodontist put in a temporary filling and asked me to visit a specialist to get the crown done.

I have maxed out my dental insurance for this year. My question would be... is there a concept of a "temporary crown" and how long does it last/ how long can I wait until I get the tooth permanently restored with a permanent crown?

You can have a temporary crown placed (after a core or post %26amp; core) and then have the impression for the permanent crown in 2008. There shouldn't be a problem with doing it like that, as long as you don't wait too long.

Also, many general dentists do a great job with crowns... it's an alternative to going to a prosthodontist, where the fee will probably be higher. On the other hand, prosthodontists have additonal years to perfect thier specialty... the choice is yours, though.

Yes, sometimes people do keep their temps in for years, but the chance of decay developing under the temp is higher the longer you wait, since the margins aren't perfect.

Good luck.
Reply:well they told me i had to keep my temp crown for 2weeks while they made my permanent onebut my mom uused to be a dental assistant and she said that people had theirs for years ...just make sure u buy some cap glue/paste stuff that way you can put it back on if it falls off...you can get it at many pharmacies
Reply:The dentist could put a temp crown and wait until your are ready for the perm. However, I would not wait for the temp itself because you run the risk of fracturing the tooth and end up needing it to be extracted! Temps are only temps and are not meant to last a long period of time. A molar takes alot of chewing pressure so be careful. I reccomend you consulting with your dentist and see what they reccomend. Dont Wait!!!!
Reply:the temp will last a couple of weeks - months depending on what you eat i am in the same sit and mine came out but you can go to the drug store and buy temp filling over the counter try not to chew gum i love to chew gum now that i dont smoke and i cant keep a temp in and mine is in the same exact place.....
Reply:When the tooth is preped for a permanent crown, a temporary is placed while the lab makes the final crown. It is only recommended that you wear the temporary for 3 weeks. In order to even get the crown started you would have to pay at least half of the cost anyway. So if your insurance is maxed you would have to pay out of pocket anyway. I would recommend at least having a permanent filling placed until you can have the crown done.
Reply:The temporary filling the endodontist put in probably won't last very long. Teeth that have root canals usually need 2 procedures done, they need a build-up ( a big filling that goes under a crown) and the crown. Sometimes the build-up can be done and the crown done later. This may be an option for you. Since your insurance is maxed you'll have to pay for the build-up, but it would protect the investment you made in the root canal. The temporary can wash out and cause leaking. Hope this helps you.
Reply:I think they last pretty long, you just have to be careful f what you eat. No chewing ice or anything super hard, or no sticky things like taffy. I had a temp. crown for a couple months, with no problems, but I wouldn't reccommend trying to keep it very long.
